Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of life’s most meaningful moments. Those first few weeks pass quickly—tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and delicate features change almost overnight. Because this stage is so brief, many parents choose to capture it through a professional newborn photoshoot. A common question, however, is when the best time is to schedule one.

The Ideal Window: 5–14 Days After Birth
Most professional newborn photographers recommend scheduling your baby’s photoshoot within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this period, newborns are typically:
Sleepier, making it easier to gently pose them without disturbing their rest
More naturally curled, still resembling the cozy position they had in the womb
Less sensitive to movement, allowing photographers to safely position them for classic newborn poses
Because babies at this stage tend to sleep deeply, photographers can capture those peaceful, curled-up images many parents love.

Why Booking Early Matters?
Although the photoshoot happens after your baby is born, it’s best to book during your pregnancy, usually in the second or early third trimester. This allows your photographer to reserve time around your estimated due date.
Once the baby arrives, the photographer will adjust the exact session date to fall within that ideal newborn window.
Booking early helps ensure:
Availability with your preferred photographer
Enough time to plan styling, props, and color themes
A relaxed experience without last-minute scheduling stress

What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?
Life with a newborn can be unpredictable, and sometimes that ideal window passes. The good news is that beautiful photos can still be captured after two weeks.
Older newborn sessions often focus more on:
Natural poses rather than curled positions
Awake moments and eye contact
Parent-and-baby interactions
These sessions can feel more lifestyle-focused and still produce meaningful images of your growing baby.
When to Schedule the Session During the Day
For the best results, most newborn sessions are scheduled in the morning. Babies tend to be sleepiest earlier in the day, which helps create a calmer and smoother session.
Morning sessions also typically provide:
Soft natural light
A quieter environment at home
A more relaxed pace before the day becomes busy
Preparing for Your Newborn Photoshoot
Once your session is scheduled, a few simple preparations can help everything go smoothly:
Try to keep your baby awake for a short period before the session (ideally 1 hour)
Feed your baby right before the shoot begins
Dress your baby in loose clothing to avoid marks on the skin
Heat the room (where the session will take place) to about 80F
You can give a bath to baby before the session, that will keep them awake and help them to relax.
While some of the packages include sibling portraits, arrange some activities for your toddler right after their segment.
Please avoid family and other visitors come in during the photoshoot. A calm relaxed environment helps to create those beautiful portraits.
Have some diapers, wipes, burp clothes and a pacifier prepared for your photographer.
An experienced photographer will guide you through the entire process so that the session remains comfortable and safe for your baby.

Capturing a Moment That Passes Quickly
The newborn stage is incredibly short. Within just a few weeks, babies become more alert, stretch out more, and begin changing rapidly. Scheduling a newborn photoshoot during those first days allows you to preserve the fleeting details that make this stage so special.
Years later, those images become more than photographs—they become memories you can hold onto forever.
